Tired as I was after the festivities of a very long long weekend celebrating something or other, I found the energy to attend Uncertain States at the Cat and Mutton in Broadway Market yesterday evening, and glad I did too. Julio Etchart took us on a journey through his work as a documentary photographer that transported us to many parts of the globe. It was an interesting trip and gave a real indication of not only the breadth of Julio’s work in many locales and within many cultures but also the depth of his work with specific groups of people and sub cultures. Julio’s presentation led on to a discussion at Uncertain States on the role of photo journalism in facilitating social change, the economics of working in the genre of documentary photography and the changes that technology brings. Perhaps the highlight of the evening, however, was a performance piece where Julio’s son Alex, a musician, presented poetry written by Julio to accompany Julio’s images of the 2011 riots in London. The combination of sound, words and images was truly engaging. The discussion afterwards touched on the subject of image presentation in a world saturated with imagery and I would have to say despite the abundance of on-screen images in the privacy of our own laptops, the live performance with visual background/foreground surrounded by an audience of interested people is a special experience for the viewer. Thank you to everyone who helped make Wednesday evening’s Photography Auction a huge success. The money raised will go towards an MA Show catalogue and the Photomonth 2012 exhibition planned for October/November. Thanks especially to all of our guests for their generous support and thanks to the members of Ahoura for entertaining us with a very enjoyable set of traditional Iranian music. Thanks to Lottie Davies for an entertaining and inspiring talk. Thanks to the man with the hammer, Ciaran Grealish our auctioneer for the evening and last but not least thanks to everyone who donated prints for the auction: Spencer Rowell, Nick Haeffner, Andy Lawson, David George, Mick Williamson, Sue Andrews, Elena Sarghuita, Gonçalo Bispo, Begoña Garcia, Elizabeth Bicher, Geoff Titley, Saman Partovi, Ozan Guner, Lauren Mashford, Jane Garfield, Alastair McCrea, Bruna Martini, Fotios-Kyriakos Variatzas.
MA Photography students at the Sir John Cass Faculty of Art Architecture and Design, London Metropolitan University are holding an auction of photographs on Wednesday May 23rd 2012, to raise funds for an exhibition of their work during Photomonth 2012. The fundraising evening will include a talk by award winning photographer Lottie Davies as well as music by Iranian traditional music group, Ahoura. The auction of photographs by students of the Sir John Cass MA Photography course and established photographers will follow the talk and music and be conducted by a professional auctioneer. Lottie Davies is a multi-award-winning and BAFTA-nominated fine art, travel, editorial and commercial photographer. Her fine art work is themed with stories and personal histories, the tales and myths we use to structure our lives: memories, life-stories, beliefs. She has won recognition in numerous photographic awards including first prize at the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Awards at the National Portrait Gallery, London in 2008. Photomonth 2012 is the annual East London Photography Festival which takes place in October and November each year. The festival was founded in 2001 and aims to demonstrate the diversity of contemporary photography. In 2011 over 100 galleries and venues exhibited work by established and emerging photographers. The Cass MA Photography students are planning to exhibit their most recent work as part of the festival in 2012. The Sir John Cass MA Photography students’ fund raising evening will be held at: Sir John Cass Gallery (Adjacent to Aldgate East Underground Station)
